Meeting with a visionary

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Attended
a seminar last nite at IPP Wealth Management. I would say it’s very
informative and refreshing. Basically, IPP is a wealth management
company which has been in operation since 1984. What makes it so
different are the missions and goals they have compared to other
insurance companies.

The company placed a significant focus on 3 areas, wealth, health and relationship
upon all their employees. Obviously it means making money with a good
health while having a strong relationship with your family and friends.
And the most impressive thing is that the organization is client
centric. Because wealth management must be done with the client’s needs
and affordability in mind and not of how much commission the advisor
will get in return. Well, it’s not up to me to judge, it for those ppl
who have financial advisor to judge for themselves. How would u feel
when you’ve placed your money and trust into someone who have promised
you that they will go together with you to take care of your wealth
then all of a sudden when some accident happens, you realised that the
person who you placed your money and more importantly your trust into
have left the business? And guess wat, your problem has only just
begun. I’ve seen ppl joining the financial advising industry with the
wrong purpose in mind. They go in for the money not because they wanna
serve ppl. I don’t blame those ppl coz money counts and it applies to
many ppl including me.

Anyway, I’m not here to share abt being a
financial advisor. It’s the meeting up with 1 of the directors that
really made the whole seminar memorable. I only know his name as
Patrick. It was his vision that really impressed me. He has a plan in
mind and he dared to put his plan into action. He input a very strong
culture of being physically healthy besides just making money. He
introduced a weekly exercising regime that involves all the employees.
And the best part? They happen even during office hours. Imagine your
boss saying this to everyone on wednesday @ 3pm, "Hey everyone, time to
pack up and hit the gym"

He also made sure that the people who
join the company are client centric instead of only making money and
leaving the business when you tink you’ve earned enuf. And by doing so,
his employees are really focused in what they are doing and they are
really enjoying doin what they are supposed to.

Well, how many
ppl out there like their jobs? Sure the passion will be there when you
just join the company. But as you get the wonderful and long awaited
pay rise and promotions, you get disillusioned and stressed out and
shagged out and you eventually want out or whatever outs that suit you.
Patrick believes not only having good employees who have the drive and
passion but also the importance of the company doing the pacing with
its employees.

The reality is that all organizations are working
for 1 thing, revenue. Because it’s the only element that keeps the
company afloat and help it progress. But it’s the pace of how you earn
it. Apparently, most companies want their employees to run like a
sprinter. Run at the fastest pace to overtake others and you’re safe to
reach the finish line. But the journey and growth of an organization is
not jus a sprint but it’s a marathon of long distance and you need the
people who can last from beginning to end not just take the lead at the
100m.

Patrick’s vision of an organization is not just the 100m
race but the 42km marathon. And he knows not everyone is born a
marathon runner that’s where the company wil become the pacer to help
its employees along the way. It’s a different management approach
compared to what alot of companies here in Singapore are doing. It’s
can’t b helped since everyone has been instilled with the mentailty of
"kiasu" since birth. So it’s very refreshing to hear and see that a
singaporean dared to execute this plan into a local company. Quite a
visionary I should say.

1st interview

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Ok,
I went for my interview this morning at a IT Company located at
Tampines for the position, Sales & Marketing Executive. The job
scope is manageable and the pay ain’t too bad for a freshie like me
since I’m new into this field. (Can’t ask for more since I’m a noob).
Everything about this job is good except for the fact that it’s an
Indian IT Company, which means most of the staff are not locals, mostly
from Indian where they set up a branch office in Singapore.

The
moment I stepped into the office and I know I’ll have a great deal of
difficulty trying to get used to it. I took a glimpse around the area
and only found 2 chinese dudes. Wat a great shock to me. Man oh man.
Really wonder should I turn down the offer…

When I went thru
the interview I know I’m in for a ride coz of their heavily accented
english. (Oh my GOD! How can I work like this???) I had to ask my
interviewer to repeat almost every questions coz I really cant catch
his words. I could tell he was quite pissed. The 2nd interviewer was a
friendly indian lady but stil her accented english is a real problem to
me. When it was the 3rd interviewer’s turn, I felt like surrendering.

However,
I kinda like the opportunities it presented to me. It’s very
challenging and it sure provides me a great room to learn about market
research and coordination. I’ll stay on just for the chance to learn.
This is a great chance for my to get outta my comfort zone and to
absorb more. Coz I believe a person learn most when they are outta
their comfort zone.

Now I gotta meet out with my frens more often jus to provide the mental support that I need. GOD help me~~~

Chalet havoc

Friday, March 16th, 2007

Just had a celebration for quite a few events. My birthday, my cousin’s (asher) entry of NS and his girlfriend’s (Ester) birthday as well. She only older than me by 2 days. Amazing… And these events took place at downtown east’s chalet. The most heart wrenching thing was after we realised that our unit number had turned out as the top prize winning number in 4D the week b4. WTF!?

Damn, if only we knew, we’ve struck top prize and can even afford to BBQ abalone. And not sliced abalone but the whole chunk of it.

Anyway, back to the chalet, was a pain in the ass trying to overlook all the items like food, utensils, guest list, nv thought I need to do all these things again. But then again I asked for it. 1st of all thanks to all who gave me face and turned up for the event. I sincerely thank you frm the bottom of my heart.

The 1st day was for Ester and Asher. Nothing much to comment on except that Asher got thrashed by me with the creamy cake and whip cream that appeared outta nowhere… (Hehehe) Sorry bro but it was totally necessary since Ester oredi volunteered u for the highlight. In a way, can get u mentally prepared when ur 21st birthday arrives in 7 months time. Only difference is dat I wont b the one thrashing u, I’ll b the clean up squad instead. Promise…

2nd day is for my birthday and my turn 2 b thrashed but dis time it’s from a spray can. I became snow man but not alone, I dragged Belinda along with me. U could hv jus kept urself outta sight but no…. u jus had to gloat at my misfortune. Sorry babe, but I jus had to do it, can’t let my beloved "xiao mei" miss out all the fun.

The most memorable incident was not related to any of the 3 main characters. The ones involved were Sean and Jason. The whole incident goes like this… 5 (Asher, Sean, Jason, Ester, me) of us were drinking a bottle of Vodka, I and Sean drank like 3 quarter, while the other quarter was settled by the other 3. Slightly after an hour, Jason began to act weird. (He really cant drink, he only had a few sip here and there) He took off his top and began to spout nonsense. I wont goto exact details but all I can say is that taking care of a drunkard is a damn chore. Especially when dat drunkard does alot of nonsense and talk alot of crap. Jason almost brought the house down if not for us stopping him. Sean was stil in control of his actions but he hugged the toilet bowl for 3 hours……….. "-_-  1st time I had to take care of drunkards, usually it’s the other way round. Now I know how Qiye felt dat time at Mdm Wongs…

Being at the chalet sure brought back alot of memories during my 21st birthday. Alot of sweet memories… And how time flies, I’m 23 now.
